Thanks to Professor Salt, who offered many suggestions on where I might find lunch between Irvine and El Segundo, off the 405. I tried Memphis. Loved it!

The atmosphere is very cool; retro fifties dive bar cum restaurant. The waitress told me the restaurant had been there for nine years. Before that, she said, it really was a dive bar that neither of us would have wanted to go to.

The lunch menu is a nice mix of traditional and southern style sandwiches, with things like a fried catfish po 'boy and a cobb salad sandwich looking particularly appealing. They also have a nice array of gumbos and salads.

Dining alone, I opted for one of their specialties, crab cakes with smoked tomato sauce and frisee.

Although they had a bit more filler than I would have liked, the flavour was very nice. They were fried in a cornmeal crust, so the texture had a nice crunch on the outside and a lush, fresh tasting interior. The sauce was perfect; tomato and smoke with a nice bit of heat.

I look forward to returning. Thanks, Professor.
