We went to Ma's Islamic Beijing Cuisine Restaurant on Orangethorpe, 601 Orangethorpe . The decor is a little over the top, but much nicer than normal chinese restaurants. There is a huge gold chandelair that greets you along with a waterfountain with different color spotlights. We waited an hour for a table of 5, and there were lots of angry patrons arguing for tables and trying to insert themselves ahead of others who were obviously there before them. It's a newly opened restaurant so I think they are still trying to get their things in order.
On to the food:
sa-cha beef (the flavor used for hot pots) it was ok, not the best, but I did like the baby bok choy.
veggies - big pea sprouts - these are my favorite veggie and they did a good rendition of it, a little bit on the salty side though, but with rice, it was good.
their signature lamb dish with leeks - very tasty, although i think i've had it better elsewhere, they did a good job of this dish.
islamic onion pancake/sesame bread - this tastes the same at every restaurant to me . . . maybe i'm just not a huge bread fan.
warm pot of soup with beef - this was a good clear soup with lots of veggies, clear noodles, and some beef. the cabbage tasted like it was pickled a little, and it all went together rather well.
all in all, it was good, but not worth waiting an hour and waiting in the lobby with a lot of other angry hungry patrons fighting for a table. i won't be back, especially since it's rather far for me.
i would recommend making a reservation if you are going to go.
