Margie's Diner in San Luis Obispo

gordon wing | Apr 21, 200302:04 AM

Last week we stayed overnight in San Luis Obispo - the south end of town - at the Rose Garden Inn ( I don't recommend it ) which is next door to Margie's Diner, that I do recommend. We had a little breakfast there but liked what we had and the generous plates on other tables looked very good. ( I was holding out for a burger and onion rings at Good Ole Burger in Paso Robles. ) My wife had some pancakes and eggs over easy.....the pancakes were huge and nicely done....eggs were done correctly. I ordered orange juice, which was made from freshly squeezed local oranges - very good - low acid - very easy to drink. I ordered a "side" of home fries that turned out to be a humongous plate of nicely browned red potatoes with onions and some other diced veggies(?) - the potatoes were accompanied by a dish of their house made salsa - which was very tasty but could use a bit more heat. This order of potatoes ($3.25) could serve 2-3 people! The service was good and the ambiance very pleasant. Other tables had very large plates full of food - no one will leave this place hungry. We didn't have dinner here but the parking lot was full. Margie's Diner is a Central Coast Mini chain with other outposts in Paso Robles, Goleta, Morro Bay, Atascadero, Salinas and Monterey. Their menu says they serve Real Food - no mixes, microwaving, pre packaged, etc....
