Mamaroneck dining pt 1

Gotta say that Mamaroneck has some of the best dining per square mile than any other town I've been to. Whether it's take out Chinese or white linen French, this town likes to eat well. I've lived in Mamaroneck for just over three years now after moving from Jersey City and was stunned at the veriety and quality of the food here.

Most Chinese food afficionados are drawn to Lum Yen on Mamaroneck Ave and Boston Post Road like mosquitoes to tree sap (bad similie, I apologize), which is good, but overlook the other equally good if not better places just down the road. My new favorite is Dragon City at 431 Mamaroneck Rd. Looks just like all the other take out places: Small seating area with walkup counter and a lit menu above it all complete with stunning, and sometimes downright unsettling, photographs of the specials.

There is nothing on this menu that isn't on the menu at the umpteen other places just like in not only in Mamaroneck but anywhere else. There is nothing about the service that is better or worse than the others either. No, what separates Dragon City is it's ability to get the food to taste and look exactly as it should. The General Tso's chicken meat is tender, slightly crisp to the palate with a sweet honey glaze that provides ample heat in the back end. The ribs are tender as well and are basted with the same day-glo sauce as everywhere else, they just taste fresher than the others. The Dragon and Phoenix rocks as do the vegetarian dishes.

Each time I go I'm pleased. I think it's the freshness of the ingredients that sets Dragon City apart. You really can taste the difference. Also, I fell they don't try to make it something it isn't. No lily guilding here. When restaurants try to mess with a simple dish, accidents happen. DC avoids the accidents by simply sticking to the play but doing it right. They claim no MSG and I believe them, me being sensitive to it.

Do yourself a favor and check them out.

Any comments or dissentions are welcome.

More later.
