Lovely dinner at Jane

Yesterday I was asked to make a reservation for 6 people, including my parents, two friends of theirs from out of town and my younger brother. The specifications were that some lighter food options be available, that the restaurant be downtown but nowhere "scary" like Chinatown or the East Village (sigh) not be "too strange" (double sigh) and have most entrees under 20 dollars. I selected Jane and was quite pleased with my choice.

The service was delightful - I would say very friendly without being irritating. Most appetizers were 7-8 dollars, with entrees ranging between 15 dollars (for the burger) and 22 (for something I don't remember.) However, most of the entrees seemed to be clustered around the 16-18 dollar range.

I had a glass of watermelon lemonade. To my delight, I was provided a little bottle of sugar water on the side, so I could make the lemonade as sweet or tart as I wanted. I found this thrilling because I like my lemonade very, very tart, and barely used any of the sugar water. It was excellent.

My salad, a five lettuce salad with parmesan, was generous and prettily presented. My mother had a mushroom soup which she said was superb. My brother had an extremely tasty appetizer of some kind of caramelized scallops (4 per app)

The entrees were unusually generous in size. I had the St. Peter's fish in brown butter with calamari (aka, tilapia). I had three filets in my dish. My parents' friend had what seemed like an entire plate full of lamb chops. I stole one (I love lamb) and it was delicious.

Unfortuantely, we had to leave early, so I could not have the strawberry shortcake, which looked lovely. In any case, everything I tried was very good, the service was a delight, and the portions quite generous. On Sundays they have a "budget menu" with 12 dollar entrees and it certainly looks worthwhile based on my experience. Everyone there, from my parents to my 25 year old brother, enjoyed it.

They also have a private room downstairs that looks like it seats about 25-30 people, so that would be a great option for someone looking to host a party.
