Los Jarritos - what happened?

In a post below I indicated that Los Jarritos is one of the better sit-down Mexican places in SF. Well, I am sorry to say that the food was not as good as when I was there last (a few months ago).

First of all, the chips and salsa are very good. I think their chips are some of the best I have had in a while. The salsa was fiery and had a hint of cumin.

My father ordered the birria, which he really enjoyed. But he still didn't think it was as good as the birria he has had with "El Potrillo" in Oakland. El Potrillo's restaurant is on 23rd (or so) and International Blvd. He ranked the birria at Los Jarritos with the birria at La Palma - good, way better than Chava's though.

My mom orderded the sopes - one chicken and one beef. These were very disappointing. I was expecting 2 cripy-ish sopes with shredded beef and chicken. The refried beans, which were also not very good, were so soupy and they ended up making the sopes soggy. The beef was "steak a la mexicana"!! The chicken was ok. She also commented that the rice tasted like Maggi seasoning, which my mom does not like.

I kept it plain and orderded a quesadilla with rice and beans. I ordered the quesadilla because I really like their fresh tortillas, but even the tortillas were a bit blah this time.

I will give it one more try - if only for the chile verde dish. Otherwise, I hope Los Jarritos isn't going downhill.

FYI - they are making capirotada, a traditional Mexican dessert eaten during Lent, on Fridays through Lent. I am not sure what their version is like, but I saw a big box of toasted french bread slices near the counter.
