My brother & I just tried Los Jarochos, the most recent Mexican restaurant to open in Flemington. They opened about 1 yr ago in a small space in Turntable Junction previously occupied by Canela's (Latin cuisine?).
The owners are from Veracruz, so the menu is a bit different from the two other places in town owned by people from Oaxaca, with much more of a focus on seafood. Fish entrees are the priciest, topping out at $16.95. although there are plenty of other entrees in the $9-$13 range. Variety seems quite good (many items I was totally unfamiliar with), with a number of the standards, but no Fajitas. :-)
Unlike the other Mexican places in town, Los Jarochos' dining room was thoughtfully decorated, pleasant, and very clean. Service was somewhat friendly, but consistently confused and almost painfully s-l-o-w. It took 20 mins to get the complimentary basket of chips and green salsa; the appetizers came out 20 mins after that. Many diners seemed to be irritated by the slow service. The ~30 seat dining room was full when we arrived, but quickly cleared out. Service didn't improve. For a new restaurant this is excusable, but at this point they should have it together.
Once we finally received our food, it was just good. Nothing to get excited about, and definitely not as good as Viva Mexico. Service made the whole experience a bit of a downer, but I'd certainly give it a try again - on a night other than Saturday.
Anyone else have a similar experience?
