Thanks very much to all Chowhounds who recommended some great places to eat in London! I couldn't wait to get back and report...
Sea Shell on Lisson Grove -- Great fish & chips! My husband and I both ordered the haddock and it was really fresh and tasty.
Bodeans BBQ -- We got a little scared when we walked in and we were the only people there (it was 10:15 on Saturday night). There were 2 employees just sitting around chatting. But after some deliberation about whether to stay or go, we asked for a table and they told us that the table service is downstairs. We felt like idiots! but made our way downstairs, and boy were we glad that we stayed! Service was as friendly as can be and the food was delicious. My husband had the bbq chicken and I had the baby back ribs. My husband has actually never tasted ribs before (he doesn't eat red meat), but he dug right into mine and loved every bite!
New Tayyab -- I looked at the website for New Tayyab so that I could find the exact address and I noticed that it mentioned calling for reservations. So we made an 8:30 reservation for that evening (Sunday). It took us a little while to find the place once we exited the tube station, but we arrived at just 8:30. As we were approaching the place, the smell of the food was so amazing. The place was packed, and the reservation meant nothing, but we only had to wait about 10 minutes before being seated. We ordered samosas, and chicken tikka for appetizers, and the chicken tikka was probably the best rendition that we've ever tasted. It was so moist and flavorful. For entrees we ordered the Karahi chicken and chicken tikka masala (I know, not the most adventurous). We also got rice and 2 kinds of nan. Everything was fantastic! I was so stuffed, but I couldn't stop eating until all the plates were completely finished. I kept thinking how I could never settle for mediocre Indian food again.
Rock and Sole Plaice -- My husband loves fish & chips again, so on our last night we tried this place. I thought it was good, but not great. Maybe we just got there a little late (about 9:45), but I felt like the food had been sitting around for a while. I had the cod and my husband had the haddock. I liked the Sea Shell better, but he liked this place better.
Mela -- We had lunch here before we left for the airport and I'm so glad that we tried it. The lunch specials were a great deal and everything was delicious. Once again, I had the chicken tikka masala and my husband had the Jalfrezi chicken. He loves really spicy food and he definitely found it in that dish. It was a great last meal in London.
My husband laughed at me for seaching so extensively on Chowhound before our trip (I do this before every trip), but in the end he was truly impressed with the places that Chowhounds recommended! He had never been to London before and after eating in all these places he couldn't understand why people say that there's no good food in London. We were only sorry that we didn't have a few more days to go to some other restaurants.
My favorite meal was definitely at New Tayyab. We live in New York (Manhattan) and often tend to get a little lazy when it comes to traveling any great distance for dinner. Now I'm on a quest to find a place like this in NY!
