London - Anyone for Japanese Mountain Peaches?

oonth | Mar 29, 2008 07:54 AM

Was doing some shopping in Natural Natural Japanese grocery store yesterday evening and was very surprised to come across a jar of "yamamomo" or so called Japanese mountain peaches priced £5.80. Not cheap but then again they cost around £4 in Japan so not an obscene mark up. I first came across these at a restaurant in Manhattan, liked them a lot but have been unable to source them outside of Japan, until now that is.

As the link below indicates, they are not really peaches but berries. They are tasty and refreshing and can be used in salads (regular or sashimi), ceviches, as an accompaniment to cooked fish + chicken or as a palate cleanser between courses or after a meal. And of course a nice touch at a dinner party to show off a bit of extra knowledge about Japan.

Incidentally I noticed that there is a dish featuring yamamomo puree on the menu at Kombu restaurant near the ExCel centre, haven't been and haven't heard anything about the place, sounds a little different.

Recommended for London Japanese food enthusiasts.
