Local fruit report - Swanton Strawberries and CJ Olsen Cherries

Trill | May 31, 200504:23 AM

last week I had the chance to get fruits from both the aforementioned local vendors. The cherries were bought from the Olsen cherry stand in Sunnyvale and we picked the strawberries from Swanton's UPick location.

The cherries did not disappoint. They were far from the best I'd ever tasted or the sweetest, but they were extremely flavorful with nice depth(including the tart ones even) I can't wait for cherry season to go into full swing to buy more. we'll definitely be back.

the strawberries at Swanton were sweeter than the ones we picked last year. Most of them were smallish and gave off the perfect strawberry scent, I so prefer these over the gigantic scentless strawberries available at Costco.

p.s. It's still early in cherry season and the woman at the counter mentioned that this year's crop was affected by the frequent rains earlier. Still I bought a $10 bag of bing cherries(I couldn't tell how many pounds this was as there was no indication and I forgot to ask, but it looked to be between 2-3 pounds??) The price was high, but I really wanted to try these after reading Kry's report earlier. Also, I keep hearing long-time valley residents say that the Valley had one of the best topsoils in the world before it all got paved over to make way for Silicon Valley - I had to try for myself
