A few weeks ago I posted a request for quiet, good places to take my chowhound mother for her 75th birthday. We ended up at Le Soir for logistical reasons but we were thrilled with the food, too.
This place is not cheap (appetizers $10-12, entrees $22-25) but the service, ambience and food were all excellent. There were four of us and we were all equally impressed with our choices (a rare occurrence, in my experience). Appetizers included a lobster and fennel thing that blew us away, a wild mushroom vol au vent (chanterelles), a mesclun salad, and terrine of foie gras. Entrees were sirloin steak with a touch of roquefort, salmon over artichokes, rabbit pot pie with perfectly cooked little vegetables in puff pastry, and braised beef short ribs with potato galette and baby turnips. The bread was superb, the coffee was great.
The portions weren't huge, but the flavors were so intensely delicious that it was hard to finish. I can't convey how good the sauces or underlying seasoning was. Port and stock reduction were evident in several dishes, but I fear I cannot do justice except to say: Yum!
