Lafayette Coney Island
118 W Lafayette Blvd (at Michigan Ave & Lafayette)
while working on the road in Detroit, i read several message threads on the topic of "detroit" gems -- foods that are regional to the area and not available elsewhere .. one of the recurring suggestions for detroit grub were Coney Dogs -- in particular, from detroit's coney dog mecca, Lafayette ..
the coney dog ($2.25) sausage is cooked to perfection -- the sausage casing has wonderful elasticity, creating a popping sound as you tear into the dog ..
with each bite, i would feel the crispness of the sausage casing, then the very very mild (but crunchy) onion, a sudden jolt of mustard, and finally, trails with the mild flavour of the chili ..
i wasn't as blown away by these coney dogs as i was hoping to be, but it's one of those slow addictions that build up .. i'm practically on my way back already ..
the chili fries ($2.55) were a different story .. the mcdonalds-eque fries is covered with the same beef chili .. without the competing flavours of the sausage onions, and mustard, the fries alow the chili to shine .. there's a hint of gravy in the chili -- it's almost like having fries drenched in gravy, yet not -- i polished off the fries in no time, sopping up every bit of chili i could with the fries ..
