La Villita in Durham: Holy Cow!

Tom from Raleigh | Sep 9, 2003 11:17 AM

Hello Fellow Triangle Foodies:

I've just taken a job in Durham (I live in Raleigh), so I am excited to try the many options Durhamites have for chowish food.

Yesterday was my first lunch opportunity and I had a taste for tacos. I stopped at La Villita, the trailer by the Costco. Wow! I ordered 1) tripa taco and 1)beef cheeck taco. They were wonderful. Definatly, the best tacos I've had in NC.

Both of these meats had been cooked, likely braised, ahead of time. The meat is then heated on the grill to get it hot and placed in a tortilla.

You then have your choice of fix-ins: mixed onion and cilantro, lime and 2 kinds of salsa, neon green and red. No guac or cheese, which is fine by me. The green salsa was incendiary but tasty, like the one served at the counter of El Mandado supermarket in Raleigh. The red was more smokey and also good.

They serve tacos and tortas with an array of different fillings, such as al pastor, steak, tongue, etc. The beef cheek was great, btw. The meat was moist and tender and tasted like cow. They had beverages, but I didn't investigate them.

According to an earlier post on this place, there's a sit down restaurant with the same name in Durham as well. I usually stop at taco places with wheels, I'm rarely disappointed sure I'll check it out soon, but tonight it's tacos for dinner.

Later,

Tom
