La Porte!

I tried the new restaurant, of a few weeks, La Porte; situated in the same space that Il Sole was.

I don't exactly remember where I first heard or read about it, but it was supposed to be good, and then, Tastet from the Voir gave it a raving review, and list it as one of his best of the year, so, I "had" to try it. I was in the neighbourhood yesterday, and I walked in, no reservation, me myself and I. I ended up at the bar, which is in the middle of the room, but has a nice view of the half-open kitchen.

The restaurant was decorated by the same staff that did the Club de Chasse et Peche, and the colour scheme reminds us of that, brown, beige, earth tones, very conforting, and relaxing.

The restaurant is a familly thing, the Mother handle the front of the house with 2 other staff members, and the Father and Son in the kitchen ( with 1 or two extra staff ? ), they are all very friendly, and make you fell very welcome.

now, let's get to business, the food and the menu.

The menu is very french, and can't recall what I did not have. There is the à la carte with about 1/2 entrées and 1/2 main dishes. a prix fixe at $45 with 5 courses ( 1 amuse bouche, 1 entrées, 1 main dish, 1 dessert, 1 mignardise ), or $50? with the cheese course. and there is also a 7 dish menu dégustation.

I decided to take the 5 course prix fixe menu with the following:

The amuse bouche was a spicy-ish ratatouille and caramelized onion.

The entrée was scallops with a courge purée and an émulsion of chataignes, that was good, and with the chataignes, it made the dish very winter, and conforting.

The main dish was a duo of lamb, confit on one side and "one" rack of lamb with polenta and a little bit of the ratatouille. that was very good.

The desert was awsome, some mango and fruit de la Passion ravioli and a chocolat ice cream, and a chocolat "crisp", I could have a full plate of those ravioli.

The mignardise ( truffle, a "madeleine" like thing, and an almond tuile ) was accompangnied by an infusion of black tea from India.

As for the wine, maybe the only weak thing, the list is somewhat very short, but I assume will get better as the restaurant get better and the clientèle gets bigger; but that means the wine by the Glass closelly follows what is on the main list.

I had a glass of pouilly fuissé as an appéritif, but would have been excellent with the desert, a glass of Chablis with the scallops and a glass of burgundy, a Marsannay with the lamb.

One other nice thing, is that they offer a selection of good tea, black tea, green tea, earl grey tea from that store on Bernard st. For me, it made the end of the meal better, I'm usually not in the mood for coffee, but a nice tea is very nice.

anyway, I will probably go back this winter.
