A poster recently mentioned La Belle Creole on La Brea at San Vicente. I ventured there for lunch with a friend with visions of etouffee dancing in my head...whoops, I didn't realize there were different kinds of Creole food! So it was Caribbean Creole, with no New Orleans-style dishes to be found. The menu includes jerk chicken, of course, as well as stewed chicken, goat, fried pork, stewed fish and an eggplant and cabbage dish. We ordered the goat and the pork which were both large, meaty chunks of rich, tender meat. The pork skin was nice and crispy -- it was fried, after all -- but both meats were a bit dry could have used some type of spicy sauce. The dishes came with a huge pile of black rice, which was really tasty sort of fried rice with cowpeas (like lima beans), as well as plantains. The server wasn't very communicative and we didn't know anything about Caribbean food so we were kind of on our own, we probably could have ordered better. This might be a fun place in the evening for a group who wants to try a different cuisine, especially if you took some wine or something. But it was deserted at lunch...
