kolo kitchen-berkeley-just opened

con | Sep 19, 200506:22 PM

On my walk to work today, I noticed that Kolo Kitchen was finally open. It has been meaning to open for about 2-3 years now. Maybe more. I didn’t have time to really observe too much but I ordered a turkey provolone kolo. It was generously filled with (disappointingly) I feel like Fosters Farm Deli style turkey & provolone. The clerk put it in some contraption (a microwave? though it didn’t beep) I couldn’t see under the counter & handed it to me warm. I grabbed a menu on my way out.

My overall feeling of the kolo was that it was very very similar to the filled breads from the Asian bakeries. The bread is chewy & sweet. It’s a nice treat. I’d probably have to have 3-4 for a meal though (they measure about 3” x 2”)

On their menu:

What’s a Kolo?
A kolo is a soft bread roll stuffed with gourmet fillers: cheese, eggs, veggies, and sweets. Adapted from a traditional Czech pastry called “kolache,” our recipes mark the return of old-world baking combined with the panache of contemporary ingredients.
