Made a first visit to Aki's to pick up the oft recommended guava chiffon cake for my mom's birthday. It was okay.
Some pastries identified as "kolachis" in the display case caught my eye. They were flattish, looking somewhat like large pieces of shortbread, glazed with a dollop of filling in the center. I picked up two, at 75¢ each to try.
The pastry base was yellowish in color with a tender and crumbly texture that was somewhere in between a danish and a flaky biscuit. It didn't seem yeast leavened. The cream cheese one was better than the apricot that was sickeningly sweet in combination with the thick glaze.
If I'd never had the heavenly hot bits of buttery fluff in Minnesota or the samples handcarried back from Texas by Ms. Pssst, I might receive these better. The search continues.
