I went out to dinner recently and had the largest, best mussels I've ever had. Beyond the preparation, I could tell these were something special. The shells themselves looked like the regular, blackish kind that I'm used to, but the meat inside was HUGE. Also, the meat was nearly white, something I don't think I've had before.

So, were these just great mussels by chance? Good source? Is there a "type" that they could have been (like the varieties of clams)? Or is this just the perfect season for them? Any ideas? Thanks in advance....
