KATSU-YA Encino report

compumom | Nov 10, 200511:57 PM

Last night we ate at one of our favorite restaurants-Katsu-ya in Encino. I didn't expect it to be so busy, but it took 50 minutes to seat the two of us. Then there was no room at the sushi bar so we accepted the offered table in the back corner. Suffice it to say we were starved and a bit cranky from the long wait (they told us 30 min and it was almost 50!) so we jumped when the waiter offered us drinks and we told him we'd start with the seared albacore with crispy onions. It was delicious, water didn't arrive as fast as we'd have liked, but oh well.

We like cut rolls and ordered a spicy tuna and a shrimp roll next. When they arrived they looked ugly and unappetizing. We were hungry and he didn't hang around to hear our comments anyway. The plate wasn't garnished, the rolls looked messy and squished on one plate. Not like usual. They looked like an apprentice in his first week made them. The bad news was that the rice wasn't the right texture and the rolls fell apart when lifted with the chopsticks. We caught his eye and sent them back to be re-made. They did remake them fresh and this time they were a bit neater, but the rice texture wasn't up to par.

My husband finished off with the scallop roll with the dynamite sauce. He said it was delicious, but the whole meal left a poor impression. Not at all what we were used to. Anyplace can have a bad night, but has anyone else had this experience at Katsu-ya recently?
When we left at 8:40 on Weds night there was still a line for seats!
