Though it pains me to say it, John Mueller's has gone seriously downhill. On two recent visits, I was very disappointed in the quality of the ribs, which were dry and lacking any appreciable smoke flavor. Worse still, the brisket was dramatically over-coated with a black pepper rub and cooked far too fast, resulting in a flavor and aroma I can only describe as thoroughly unpleasant.
Mueller's had been my favorite 'cue in Austin but now I'm having to re-think my preferences. Bert's on 19th still gets my vote for the Turbo T-Man (sliced brisket, sausage, chopped brisket and beans with sauce over Fritos) and House Park still turns out very good brisket, pork loin and sausage.
