Jing Du 17 in Seven Corners - Report

Steve | Dec 14, 201903:40 AM     1

Eight Chowhounds got together for dry hot pot at Jing Du 17, a new place in Seven Corners that took over Fuji Asian Fusion, which never attracted a following. This was my first time trying dry hot pot. From a list, you select your ingredients and spice level (1-3), or you can choose a non-spicy version. They also have a variety of snacks/appetizers. They add unannounced peanuts and sesame seeds to every hotpot, even if you don't ask for them. For me that's a welcome addition.

We put together a meat-based hotpot (level 1) and a seafood hotpot (level 2). There was little difference between the spice level (maybe they took it easy on us?), both were just a bit buzzy, though it accumulated over time. Sauce used will be the same either way, so the taste difference is only the ingredients you choose. I liked adding the kelp and the fish balls (they are dense but contain beef inside) to the squid and fish filet pieces (which come breaded).

For the meat ingredients, the only item to AVOID is the sausage, which is a very salty hot dog. The dried beef cubes (basically small diced morsels of stew meat) were a nice touch. Lotus root is a great addition for any hotpot.

We also had snacks of corn balls, lotus root, tripe (listed as belly on the menu), and wood ear mushrooms (listed as agaric). All were very good.

This was a very good meal. I don't know how it compares to other similar places, but in general I prefer this to the Cantonese offerings at Hong Kong Pearl next door. I will go back.
