Jeffery's Review

We went to Jeffery's last night for my husband's birthday. His plane was delayed, so we could not make the 6:30 reservation (when I made the reservation, they said that was the only time they had). I called to let them know we were not going to be able to keep the reservation because of the delay & they asked me what time we could be there? I said 8, she said OK. I was glad they could seat us, but wondered how?

We got there around 8 & were immediately seated. There were about 3-4 other tables that were empty, but most filled up by 8:30. We started with the martini cart, I had the potato vodka with a twist & H had a gin martini with olives. The preparation was artful, my martini was so clean & tasty & I loved the glasses.

They did not rush us in the least and we took our time with our cocktails. We finally ordered the oysters for the app & shared the porterhouse for our main with steak fries.

While waiting for our oysters, we talked with the Som & ordered a red burgundy. We will be in Beaune in June, so she spent some time with us reviewing the different ones they have available and was very helpful. The wine we actually had was expensive and a little light for the porterhouse.

The oysters were perfectly cooked and all the flavors were very good. I think I liked the original oyster dish that Jeffery's used to serve, but I like things a bit spicy which this version is not.

The porterhouse was a thing of beauty. Cooked perfectly medium rare with a nice salt & pepper crust, it rivaled any porterhouse I've had at good steak restaurants in NYC. We did not order any of the sauces as we believe good steak does not need a sauce & this one definitely did not need sauce! We did order the big onion ring which was not worth it. The onion slid right out of the batter, so I would say, don't bother. The steak fries are just big, thick fries, not pomme frites. They tasted kind of mealy and in our opinion, not good. We each had about 2 and called it quits.

For desert, we had the opera cake which is an almond cake with chocolate mousse, coffee buttercream & banana ice cream. Neither is us thought this was very good. None of the flavors really stood out. I think their desert list is the weakest part of the menu.

I really enjoyed our meal. It was nice to get dressed up, have a relaxed meal with great service & also it was just lively enough, but not so much that we couldn't talk. Would I go again? Hard to say. It's pretty pricey, although a lot of that was the wine. The porterhouse was pricey, but we have half of it left over for today. Having steak & poached eggs & champagne! Let the birthday celebration continue!
