Coffee & Tea 10

Japanese Green Tea

In the past I have made disparaging remarks about the quality of Japanese Green Tea available in Toronto, and while I still don't think there is much of a market for it, I had some success over the weekend at Sanko on Queen West. I had been here before and thought the selection was poor, however guess I must have been having on off day before as I was reasonably impressed yesterday. So I am doing some penance for calling them out in a previous post!

In fact they have a limited, but nice selection of higher end green teas including a variety of organic teas. I ended up purchasing the Okame Hyottoko Cha-Gold (about $23/100grams), which seems to be a brand name for a high end Sencha (Okame and Hyottoko are names of the traditional Japanese Masks pictured on the foil package). It is quite flavourful, roundly full-bodied and a slightly sweet, slightly bitter (and long) finish. Recommended, at least until I can get someone to send me some high end yabukita from Japan.
