Japanese cuisine in a strip mall

Theatre Square in Orinda California is probably the last place you would expect to find one of the best Japanese restaurants but I promise you it's the best I have ever had with exception to a meal I once had cooked by my Japanese friend and his mother which by the way is the best meal I have ever had in my entire life.

Serika looks like a run of the mill Sushi bar in a strip mall with the Shoji style lights and wraparound Sushi bar and you would be partly right because they do specialize in Sushi and most of the seating is at the bar but fortunately for those of us who enjoy Serika, it's never too busy to get a table. The staff are all Japanese and extremely friendly.

They use a very high quality nori in their sushi and other dishes so it doesn't have that swampy taste like inferior nori does and the seafood is so fresh that even in this very small restaurant I can't smell it. As a vegetarian, Japanese restaurants usually do not have many things for me to eat. I can always have miso soup, rice and vegetable tempura and I have come to rate most Japanese restaurants on how well they make these dishes.

The tempura here is fresh and not too oily, the rice is sticky and the miso soup has chopped green onion added to it which gives it a great flavor but the reason I go back is a dish call Agedashi Tofu. It's tofu that has been covered in Panko bread crumbs, fried and then added to a beautiful broth and topped with shaved daikon radish. There are other restaurants that serve this dish but the chef's interpretation of this dish is a masterpiece.>
