Italian beef

What exactly is " italian beef " (subject of a recent thread in the LA board)?
Except for bistecca fiorentina (which as far as I know is pretty much a regular steak, decent to good, on spinach), any other meat you get in Italy is an elaborate concoction I wouldn't call "beef". Not that I don't love a good brassato al barolo, or polpettini, or carne cruda, but again I would't call that beef. As far as cows born in Italy, well, that might be another story altogether.
