introduction to Eastern European food?

So, knowing absolutely nothing about Eastern European food (aside from, er, vodkas and a long history of cheap frozen pierogies) -

What are the relationships between the various sorts of food? I know that, in L.A., there are plenty of Russian places, that Uzbekistan place, several mentioned Hungarian places, some Polish places.

What's the difference in cuisine? Good places to start?
