Recent impressions of 4 PARIS RESTAURANTS

Hello there,

Just recently returned from a one-week stay in Paris. Just wanted to share with you some thoughts on restaurants we went to:

1) CHEZ JANOU -- in the Marais; great atmosphere; nice waiter; good house wine; a few outdoor tables available facing a pedestrian square; fair prices --unfortunately, the food was just okay, not memorable. My focus was on seafood, and I found the mussels and tuna to be bland.

2) L'ENDROIT -- also in the Marais; This place we just popped into one night when some of the other places nearby were booked up. Festive atmosphere. Funny waiter. Had a tasty shrimp-and-avocado salad, where the shrimp had a nice, smoky flavor. My husband and I both really enjoyed this dish. The main fish entree, however, was disappointing. It was a "trio" of fish, including salmon, cod and (I think) halibut. Again, rather dull. For some reason, I had bad luck with fish on this trip.

3) GEORGES (on the 6th floor of the Pompidou Centre)
-- WOW! I was worried about this place because I had heard reviews trashing the food AND the snobby service. We found the exact opposite to true! Our waiter was adorable, we had a KILLER view of the Eiffel Tower and a panorama of the city. Even the bathrooms were gorgeous! I felt like JAMES BOND!
The food, though NOT FRENCH, was simple and tasty. I had large shrimp marinated in Thai spices and grilled. Hubby and I both had a super-fresh crabmeat-and-avocado salad, which we loved.
If you decide to go, try to get a seat right by the windows -- or you can sit outside in good weather. Totally worth it!!

4) LE COUPE CHOU (rue Lanneau in the Latin Quarter/5th arr.) -- Another WOW, but in a completely different way than GEORGES. This place is hauntingly romantic. Candles everywhere. Gorgeous dark wood. You enter, and you feel like you are about to embark on a Medieval feast. Everyone in my party was impressed.
I enjoyed the duck with peaches and the escargots. Also outstanding was the steak au poivre. Very tender meat.

In general, just about anything duck-related that I had in Paris was outstanding. (Wish I could say the same about the fish...maybe next time?)
Oh -- and the manager told us that the building dated all the way back to the 13th century, with additions made in the 14th and 15th centuries.
