Gordon's Cafe & Catering got its start as Old Town Deli & Cafe. For its 25th anniversary this year, it renamed itself. And rather unbelievable, this Salinas native's first visit was on Friday, lured by the reputation of the clam chowder. I figured that it was most likely to appear in the rotation on Fridays . . . and I was surprised to walk up and not see it listed among the five soups on the sidewalk board. On the board inside, a sixth soup selection was offered on the day's menu, but no mention of clam chowder. I asked at the counter what day I should return for clam chowder and learned that its offered on Mondays and Fridays. Even though it was not posted anywhere, clam chowder's available on those days and I got mine.
A large bowl's around $6 and chock-a-block with cubes of potatoes and diced celery, interspersed with chunks of sweet clam, scallion and onion. Not overly thick, the taste was a little flat. A good shake of black pepper and adding salt brought it to life. Pretty good, but could use more clam flavor. It does taste fresh and natural without an overcooked canned flavor or artificial flavors.
The soup selection at Gordon's stands out. Offering seven different homemade soups at a time is pretty remarkable and just what we need during wet and rainy, cold and flu season. Gordon's is also proud that it roasts turkeys fresh every day.
