Best Hot Dog in San Diego

Just returned from New York Style Deli in Normal Heights. I'd noticed the little deli with its sidewalk hot dog cart while driving by, but today was my first taste, and it was terrific.

This place is to hot dogs what Bronx Pizza is to New York pizza.

It's operated by Jim Lazary, who has recreated an authentic Rochester, NY deli right on Adams Avenue. Jim is extremely friendly and explained the various varieties -- red or white skinless, red or white pop-open, Italian sausage, and bratwurst -- which are Zweigle's brand, flown in from New York. He also serves hot pastrami and corned beef sandwiches.

I had the white skinless, and it was the best hot dog since my first Dodger dog as a 7 year old. Frankly (no pun intended), I've never been a huge hot dog fan, typically opting for a good burger when given the choice. However, the quality of the dog, combined with his special "hot sauce" of simmered and spicy ground beef, is something everyone should try.

Jim cooks the hot dogs on his cart, right in front of you on the sidewalk. You can eat at the table set up in front, or go inside and eat at the table or bar set up around the store. Inside you'll find a variety of unique east cost items, e.g., sauces, mustards, etc. in what has to be one of the cleanest restaurants in San Diego.
