My wife and I went to Honu Kitchen (Formerly Blue Honu) in Huntington yesterday evening and I have to say it was a great dining experience all around. The atmosphere is sophisticated without being pretentious, the food was excellent and the service was very attentive.
Honu is not your typical eatery. They serve small kitchen plates at reasonable prices. The average person will usually order two to three plates depending on the size of their appetite. This style of dining gives you the opportunity to try many of the dishes that are on the menu. If you go with an eating partner, make sure that you share your plates with each other. Now, lets get to the food.
We started with the "NY Strip, Spinach & Mushrooms". The steak was cooked to perfection and the caramelized onions and spinach sauce gave an added dimension to the classic strip steak. Our next plate was the "Chilean Sea Bass, Mushrooms & Tomato". We found the fish to be light and flakey with a very nice flavor. This went perfectly with the bed of tomatoes and mushrooms. Our third dish was the "Gnocchi" from the daily special menu. It was wonderful and went perfectly with the mushroom butter sauce. Our fourth plate was the Duck with cucumber and scallions. This dish was served in a Peking duck style on a thin pancake with what tasted like a citrus Hoisin sauce, my wife and I loved it. Our fifth plate was "Veal & Chorizo Meat Balls", although this was good, we found the flavor and texture to be a little bland. I think the meat balls could have used a little onion to help then along, but it wasn't bad by any means. Oue sixth and final dish was the Hangar Steak. We simply loved it. The steak was seared on the outside and juicy on the inside and topped with slices of red and yellow peppers.
My wife and I will return to this restaurant to sample some of the dishes that we haven’t tried yet. I will add to this thread after our next visit.
