HMart Edison and what to do with semi-fresh uni

seal | Aug 13, 201503:01 PM     14

Went to HMart in Edison today to buy uni and try the ramen at their food court. We had a bowl of Shoyu and a bowl of Tonkatsu. Two full big bowls arrived soon and the broth was pretty good in both. The noodles were not fresh but were fine and plentiful, but the chasu pork was almost all fat and mine had a small piece of bone hidden in it. All in all it was a mostly decent bowl that was well worth the $8 it cost.

After we ate we entered the huge store and were surprised by a small inner store called Tous les Jour, a french/asian bakery. There were many breads and pastries to choose from and we selected an almond croissant that turned out to be light and tasty. They will never give Flaky Tart a run for their money but I'm looking forward to trying some other things on my next visit.

The store is huge and very well stocked and we spent at least an hour shopping for all things asian. I had a hard time finding the uni at first but that was because I was stupidly looking for large roundish spiky things. Instead they had wooden trays of ready to serve sea urchin roe. Great! I bought three trays dreaming of dropping the roe on top of some toast spread with avocado.

I had brought a cooler full of ice packs but I still raced to the kitchen when we got home and excitedly tore open a pack and popped one in my mouth. Ugggh. There is a reason that FRESH, just opened uni is used in sushi, sashimi, and crudo preparations. This was definitely not going to fly.

So, I changed gears and looked up pasta with uni sauce recipes on the web and ended up here:

I was fresh out of osetra caviar, and all I had was plain old ronzoni spaghetti, but I made it anyway and it was amazing! OMG - make this and make it soon.

Almost forgot - I also bought some sea scallops and sliced them thin, drizzled with olive oil and fresh squeezed lime, then sprinkled them with salt, pepper and shreds of fresh cut jalapeno. So we did have some crudo after all.
