I want to start a new post about a common theme which ran through my previous "Is it ever OK to walk on the check?"
Just about everyone who responded felt that if you recieve some satisfactory service and food from a restaurant you are ogligated to pay for some part of it even if the other part is a disaster.
If you contract a painter $5000 to paint your white house light blue and return home to find that he painted half of it green and never touch the other half, would you pay him $2500. Of course not. You would probably sue him for $1000 because that is how much more your going to have to pay painter #2 for the second coat to cover the green.
We chowhounds know more then anyone that a $12 bowl of soup is not worth $12. Unless, it is served in a clean bowl by nice people in a nice restaurant that trys to make you have a somewhat enjoyable experience. However, if the soup is followed up by rudeness, an unedible entree and a dirty bathroom, it no longer is a $12 bowl of soup no matter how good it was.
