We payed this relatively new place a visit after seeing photos posted by a friend. Though the photos showed the overall decor of the place to be quite attractive, however, based on the border-line appealing looking food photos, I should have listened to my hunches and give the place a pass!.....Unfortunately, curiosity got the better of me and I sadly pay for it!!
Overall, our meal tonight was a major disappointment! Mistakes and stingy portions were strewn everywhere! They ranged from the ultra-mini size salad to the 'soggy' batter of the tempura, to the wrong sauce given for the grilled striploin steak, ( Worcestershire based Tonkatsu sauce instead of Teriyaki sauce! ) to the 'penny-pinching', miser quantity of the sushi. The latter using run-of-the-mill, cheap ingredients for the neta.
Price point, IMO, was over-priced for these type of quality and quantity, with the sushi platter the most glaring standout. 6 Nigiri pieces using mediocre and average neta plus 4 pieces of plain tuna rolls for over $22! Even the slice of decorative turnips was not pickled but just plain!
I noticed their 'Specials of the day' also feature 'whole fish sashimi' which they claimed was directly from Japan. However, with some at over $300 per fish, I wondered how ridiculous the mark-up was?
With the owner also a part owner of Richmond Hill's consistent and commendable Japanese restaurant, 'Inatei', I was expecting similar or better offerings from Hibiki. Unfortunately, I was dead wrong!
Based on tonight's experience, I don't think I'll return again and spend my hard earned money on these below-value mediocrity!!
