We finally made it to Heng Lay for lunch w/ a friend today.
The room was very clean and comfortable and we were so sweetly helped by the woman there. Servings were generous and bargain-priced, and we enjoyed ourselves.
Lifted chronologically from the paper take-out menu, we had (* =my favs):
--egg rolls ('taro' filling but all I could taste was black pepper)
--fried squid with lime pepper dipping sauce* (hot and crispy, sauce made the dish)
--pork egg noodle soup ( our server rec'd this but it was mega bland)
--beef chow foon(mee ka thung)* (tasty veg and beef but a LOT of cornstarch sauce)
--beef loc lac and fried rice* (good flavors; loved the simple fried rice which had great chewy texture)
--sweet and sour chicken soup (we must have had something diff from striperguy because this was blah to me, but the fav dish of our foodie friend. The one cool component was lotus roots that were teeny- 1/4" diameter tubes, with that same 'doily' pattern as the big slices of lotus root found in chinese and korean foods.)
--chicken coconut soup* (I've had much better thai versions)
Nothing that we had was hot spicy; not even close; so I'm guessing our server thought we'd want it that way, when in fact, it was a little meh as a result.
my main complaint was that the broths were weak. I kind of wondered if maybe they start their stock pots on Monday, which was today, so they didn't have enough simmering time to gain the flavor I was seeking......
I don't think we would drive out there again (I probably just have more of a Thai palate) but I know the people in Lowell must be thrilled to have them close by.
