Okay, so maybe there is better dim sum to be found in Houston . . . but we've been in dim sum exile in New Orleans for five years and this past weekend we visited Houston and went straight to Ocean Palace for dim sum. The duck was excellent, the bao fluffy; the dan tat (the little custard tarts) were just fine, as was the gai lan. We sampled other standards like siu mai and har gow and one of my favorites that my husband refers to as slimy noodles, these stuffed with beef. I missed the turnip cake because we didn't figure out until we were too full that you have to visit the station in the corner where they prepare it to order. Oh, and they have jook, and the churro-like doughnuts to go with it, and so much more!
Then there was the astounding Hong Kong Market to visit nearby, and the attached Asian mall, and the huge number of Chinese, Vietnamese, and other Asian restaurants and cafes all along the street. We fantasize about spending a month just trying as many as we can.
