hi. let me preface this post with: longtime lurker, rare poster. that means that this post is significant...
you know when something happens to you, something so eye-opening that you have to just stop and take stock of your life... something like a first kiss, you undoubtedly think about that first kiss, and you file everything that happened before as pre-first kiss and everything after, post-first kiss. a momentous occasion that can be used as marker in time...
new haven pizza. another momentous occasion.
about three weeks ago i went to boston to visit my sister, catch a redsox yankees game at fenway and then take the train down to nyc and hook up with my brother. the typical siblings weekend.
and then i realized... between boston and nyc lies new haven. now, i'm a big ten kid and i've never had a reason to visit. i've never even had an inclination to visit. seriously, anyone who's been to new haven has told me it's a hole (it is). and i never realized "new haven pizza" was an entity until last year.
i explained my situation to my sister who was in disbelief. we went drinking the night before, and she was upset when i tugged the sheet from her sleepy head the next morning (early, real early). we rented a car and drove to new haven, straight to sally's. sally's was closed for lunch. we sauntered up the street (it was a beautiful new england morning) and walked into pepe's. a chalk board menu that was pizza and nothing else. i loved it.
we ordered. peppers and onions with red sauce and the moose. i ate... no i ravaged it... with this huge grin plastered to my face. and i licked the soot off my fingers, smacking my lips. it was glorious. it was grand. i was not on a date, and my sister had seen me in this state before.
we returned the car and hopped on a train to nyc. my brother was jealous. i was content.
now, i've been to piece. that was my only experience with "new haven" pizza prior to this trip. i liked it. was it up to snuff or not? piece is not pepe's.
new haven pizza is incredible. my advice to anyone visiting boston or nyc... please make the two hour drive/train ride and visit new haven just to try the pizza. i'm sure i'll make time for it in the future whenever i head out east.
