Today is National Cheeseburger Day. So let me report on the happy hour cheeseburger at Sur Burger in downtown Monterey.
I was there in May when it had been open for two months by local icon Billy Quon. Happy hour is everyday from 3pm to 5pm. The burger special is 1/4 lb cheeseburger (white cheddar, please) with fries and an 8oz draft for $10.
While I considered upgrading to the full 1/2 pounder, I’m glad I didn’t. The shtick here is the SuBu condiment bar, and once I ran through most of it, this was plenty of food. If you’re someone who puts ranch dressing on everything, your personal squeeze bottle is here along with other sauces and condiments. There’s supposed to be a vegan aioli but I didn’t see it. Roasted garlic spread, dill pickle slices, ginger chutney, cured red onions, pickled sweet peppers, bread and butter pickles, pepperoncini, hot sauces, white onions, malt vinegar, EVOO, cole slaw, and a crock pot of warm onion marmalade are all provided to load onto your burger. Be forewarned that the weird Billy style coleslaw has pineapple and golden raisins in it. Still, I’d say that I fulfilled my 5-a-day here without counting the hot and crispy battered fries.
The Big Sur Golden ale was pretty flat. On Friday and Saturday late nights, $24 buys a Sur burger special and with a flute of Veuve Clicquot champagne.
