It's practically impossible to miss the Alsterpavilion, undoubtedly Hamburg's best-known cafe, eternally full of diners at all hours when it's open. It was renamed Alex im Alsterpavilion since 2001, and is run by a chain, transforming the once formal cafe into a hangout for tourists & youngsters looking for American-style fast food.
So there you have it - the cafe with a to-die for location, right by the elegant Jungfernstieg boulevard, and facing the lake, Binnenalster, with its eye-catching fountain. It's got the best view in Hamburg. And it only serves burgers, pizzas & pasta, with milkshakes, sundaes & waffles with ice-cream for afters.
The Alex cheeseburger was passable, though the accompanying Frech fries were excelllent. The chicken Caesar salad has a tasty but too-mushy chicken patty. The Caesar dressing was weak, and the bun was too light.
I ordered the waffles with cherry compote & vanilla ice-cream. The waffles was gluggy & heavy, not the light, crisp sort I expected. They do have a selection of cakes during the day, but strangely stopped serving cakes at 6pm - leaving the customers with a choice of waffles or an apple tart, with sundaes/ice-cream.
Service was patchy - the wait-staff sometimes do the "I can't see you" act as they passed by your table with unbelievable speed.
Come here for the drinks & the views, but certainly NOT for the food.
