New Hai Ky on Irving

gordon wing | Jun 18, 200201:24 AM

Had a nice lunch today at New Hai Ky -2191 Irving @23rd Ave. SF 415. 731-9948. Someone in our party was allergic to pork (poor soul!) so we had /shared the steamed chicken over rice (white cut chicken) which came with a ginger /scallion dipping sauce, beef stew over rice , the preserved orange skin duck with Ho Fun soup and the gai lon with garlic (tender greens with garlic on the menu). These four dishes came to $19 and change....well worth it. The steamed chicken (actually steeped) was properly cooked (pink at the bone and velvety) - the ginger dipping sauce was good but I prefer a bit more scallion bite. The beef stew (tendon) was lip smacking good....nice overtones of star anise, cinnamon, etc The orange skin duck with ho fun noodles was good but didn't capture my interest as much as the other dishes - the broth was savory and the duck was tasty but the texture of this duck is a bit lean and a few more garnishes ( cilantro, green onion, ginger) would have been nice. The tender greens (gai lon) with garlic were yummy. The food came quickly and they did not rush us - it was in prime lunch hour. Very nice meal....
