I took the advice of some recent posts and tried Greek Island for lunch.

I was the first one there at 11:20 am, and they seemed to be getting ready for the day’s lunch crowd.

It's one of those places where you order at the counter and they bring you the food. I asked the counter-girl about the menu and she pointed out that if you wanted a pita sandwich, you just pick your meat from about 10 selections (various souvlaki, gyro and vegetables), and then if you want a combo, you pick 2 side orders to go with it.

I chose the lamb gyro pita and sides of Greek salad (choice of dressing, I chose lemon basil) and penne with marinara.

There is seating inside and out on the patio. I sat on the shaded patio as it was a nice day.

Somehow, my order got mixed up, and they brought out a chicken souvlaki pita. Being the first one in the restaurant, I was initially a little worried, but the man who brought the food, and seemed to be the manager, was so apologetic and accommodating that it just didn’t seem like such a big deal. He brought me a new diet coke and told me the order would be right up.

The order came soon, and it filled the whole plate. The large pita sandwich was in the middle, the large salad was on the side, and the pasta was in a little cup in the corner of the plate.

The pita bread was wonderfully soft and fresh tasting. The lamb gyros was nicely spiced, and kind of crusty, as I like it. The cucumber/onion/yogurt dressing was delicious and the quantity was perfect. It kept the sandwich tangy and moist but didn’t drip all over the place.

The salad was okay. The dressing was green, which I didn’t expect. It was pretty tasty though, with romaine, cucumber, onion and feta.

The pasta was lame. It was overcooked and watery. The small amount of sauce was not mixed-in (which would have been better since it was in a little tiny cup), but spooned over the top with some grated parmesan. Unfortunately, the other side dishes didn’t look much better. From rice to cole slaw, there just wasn’t much of a choice.

I didn’t finish the pasta, and was really full when I left. I will definitely be back, but next time I won’t order the combo. Probably just a pita sandwich and based on previous posts, I’ll try some grape leaves.

The combo, with a Diet Coke, was about $8.
