We had a great meal last week at Yahaira's in Pasadena - on Colorado across from Vroman's. In spite of how the name might sound, it's not Japanese, but Mexican - the owners are Yucatecan, they also own El Portal, in the back of the same arcade. Yahaira's is mostly open for breakfast & lunch, they do dinner Thursday through Saturday.
I had their take on chiles rellenos - 2 large poblano chiles stuffed with a mix of chicken, cheese, corn and a tangy tomato-based sauce, roasted, not battered and fried. They were delicious and I could only eat one. My husband had the perfectly cooked steak topped with salsa. Lunch includes good tortas & salads.
The menu changes often - Friday night features seafood specials. Prices are unbelievably low - most entrees at dinner are $12 or less. They have beer & wine. The only drawback is the size - this place is tiny! No atmosphere, but who cares with food like this?
