Grandma's Kitchen, Whitefield, NH

hiddenboston | Sep 18, 200602:44 PM

We spent the weekend hanging out in the White Mountains of NH, including taking a drive further north (as far north as Stark and Groveton). We took a trip to Whitefield for lunch, as the town is known for its several good diners and family restaurants. I had been to a good one years ago there, but I couldn't find it (perhaps it's gone now).

We decided to hit Grandma's Kitchen, a family restaurant/diner on Route 3 north, as it was the only place in the area that was jam-packed at 2:00 in the afternoon (always a good sign!). Well it turned out to be the best place we hit all weekend, as the food was wonderful there. The turkey club with real turkey with maple-smoked bacon was pretty mouthwatering, and the cheesesteak was almost as good as the best one I've ever had (at Doogie's in Newington, CT). Both the homecut fries and the shoestring fries were excellent, too. And the waitress was as good as they get--friendly, quick, efficient, and no-nonsense.

Simple, basic atmosphere at Grandma's Kitchen, but charming in its own way: It has a small main dining area, some lunch stools around a counter, and a screened-in porch.

The other dishes we saw there looked really good. I saw a ham steak dinner there, as well as some kind of fried seafood dish--perhaps fried scallops--that smelled incredible.

I wish Grandma's Kitchen weren't so far away from Boston! It was a great find.
