Heading off to Europe in early April for a bit of a food tour taking in Rome, Bologna, Lyon, Les Eyzies and environs, San Sebastian, Madrid, Paris and London. We will be trying to locate some good spots along the way with the odd two or three star, but mostly just good, local establishments.
At this stage, we are thinking of booking a few places, possibly Akelare in SS for lunch, lunch at Le Grand Vefour (we owe a friend in Paris a favour) and somewhere in or around Lyon. With a week in the Dordogne, we will probably look at a couple of places there (ate at Le Centenaire in 99). Its Lyon thats a bit of a problem; I realise there are many great gastronomic temples in the area, but whilst we want somewhere good, we are looking for something a bit innovative.
I have read hundreds of very exciting and interesting reports from the hounds, but thought it worth letting everyone know what I am seeking and to see what people think about my plans and whether they have something to offer.
We will most probably book at least one more lunch and dinner in Paris. Diner may be at Flora, as I believe its run by the woman who had Les Olivades. We had a terrific meal there in 1999, avoided it in 2001 as friends gave it a bad report, but want to have another go based on the hounds comments.
Whilst Im on a roll, Ill have another go at getting a response to a question I posed a month or so ago. Does anyone know why the Astor lost both its stars last year? Was it, as suggested, the loss of the chef, or did things take a serious turn for the worse? I was amazed that I only received one response to my question, so much so that I thought I may have caused offence.
Please excuse the ramblings, but if anyone is able to offer advice or suggestions to my posting, I would be most appreciative.
