Good Japanese in Centreville, Va.

Just wanted to put in a word for Matsu Japanese Restaurant, 5635 Stone Road, Centreville (in the plaza with the Giant supermarket). I just finished up a job in the area and ate there every chance I got. Prices are reasonable, starting at about $7 and going up to about $15 (perhaps a few dollars more for sushi). It has a wide selection of cooked dishes in addition to a sushi bar – I strongly recommend the chicken yakisoba, a generous portion of perfectly spiced stir-fried noodles, vegetables and chicken. I was less impressed with a couple of the cooked seafood dishes I tried, but the sushi is quite delicious. The menu is large – we’re talking eight kinds of teriyaki, half a dozen noodle dishes, and various kinds of tempura, katsu, donburi, curry and a list of Korean specials.

Each meal is served with a crispy fried dumpling sample (an extremely tasty tidbit), a good-sized cup of miso, and a salad with what has to be the best dressing I’ve ever had. The restaurant has two dressings – sesame and ginger – and they’re both terrific. I know it’s a funny thing to rave over, but those little details count.

The décor is tastefully and attractive – gorgeous nature photography on the walls, wood tables, lots of clean, straight lines. The staff is tremendously friendly and attentive. (For example, I ordered a spicy soup dish and, just coincidentally, ended up coughing a bit on the first bite. The staff converged on me instantly, worriedly asking whether it was too hot. I have no doubt that if I’d indicated that was so, it would have gone back to the kitchen immediately.)

So to sum up, decent Japanese food at reasonable prices with nice décor. I no longer work nearby (moved to Baltimore) and I miss this place! But hopefully the rest of you can enjoy.
