Good Italian in LJ/SD - Cafe Milano

hungrylawyer | Jan 30, 200306:53 PM

Some past posts have requested information about good Italian restaurants. I wanted to recommend a small place, Cafe Milano on Pearl. The food is truly excellent, not overly pretentious or fussy as a lot of Italian restaurants are these days. Its a creative space with good atmosphere and great service. And, perish the thought, in my humble opinion this place stands up to some of the name places in San Francisco like the Rose Pistola or Moose’s, (both of which I enjoy) – high praise for lowly SD.

I especially recommend the salad with goat cheese, walnuts and pears an excellent juxtaposition of flavors and textures. The veal piccatta is very tender and lemon tangy, just at the right edge of too much. The penne ala vodka is the best I’ve ever had. They also offer a dinner for two for under $50 including wine. I have enjoyed a number of nice moderately priced Italian wines there. The cannole is not traditional, but it is home made and full of cream and the lemon tiramisu is great. Hope you enjoy it.
