Goji Berry Juice - some observations

T Long | Sep 28, 201501:45 PM     10

At our local Asian grocery store (Foody's) today, I saw this large promotion for bottles of Organic Goji Juice. I know goji berries are used extensively in Chinese cooking and are considered a health product. I even have a couple of goji berry plants in my garden that I harvest during the summer and use in home made soups. I was intrigued by the terms 100% Goji juice and product of Canada. My first thoughts were that there must be some extensive goji berry farms in Canada to support this venture. Checking the company's website, it informed that the berries are sourced from China. I'm assuming the company is in compliance with the rules of packaging and labeling, but I'm puzzled how a food product totally sourced in another country can be called a product of Canada. While it may follow the labeling laws by accounting for the value added in processing and packaging, its at least somewhat misleading. My second questions were whether the juice was made from fresh goji's, but its hard to imagine loads of fresh, delicate goji's being shipped from China to Canada for juice. But if reconstituted dried berries by adding Canadian water, can this still be called 100% juice? Some thoughts on a lazy Autumn day....
