Geranio Report (Old Town Alexandria)

Marra | Mar 5, 200302:36 PM     3

Made a spur-of-the-moment visit to Geranio last night, when friend said could eat a nice piece of red meat for dinner and I realized that I have *no* idea where to get a steak in OldTown! (Anyone have a suggestion?) I knew Geranio has a fairly wide-ranging menu, so he could find something satisfying, and I could find something interesting, so we went there.

Friend had veal scallopini (I didn't try it but every bite disappeared!) and I had a salad (didn't finish it all -- found the vinaigrette a tad too mustardy -- it was called a mustard vinaigrette, but still! 8-) ) and a bowl of cream of butternut squash soup with sage. The soup was absolutely wonderful. Very saitsfying and had great flavor -- tasted like there was nice meat broth behind it, and perhaps some grated cheese in it. (I didn't ask -- I am just guessing by taste.) It was truly the best squash soup I've had in town this winter --the one at Bilbo Baggins is too sweet for my taste.

I do really like Geranio. I've only had one thing there I didn't care for. I had the lobster risotto ages ago, and it was fabulous, but the last time I had it (about three or four weeks ago) the lobster was so tough that I couldn't cut it with my table knife. At first I thought it was undercooked, but that turned out not to be the case. I am still trying to figure out how lobster ends up tough, but it definitely did that night. Didn't stop me from going back, tho.
