George's Luncheonette

To those of you who have to date been partially or wholly disappointed in your searches for americana in the nooks and crannies of long island: you need look no further; George's is the Real Thing. It is a small coffee shop on county road 80 in Patchogue, and eating breakfast there on a Saturday morning in spring took me back to 1962 or thereabouts. (Caveat: I have no first-hand experience with "1962 or thereabouts".)

If your not looking for nostalgia-by-proxy, there is still plenty to recommend George's. Primarily the good food and friendly service. I had fluffy scrambled eggs and crispy but not hard bacon (a very generous portion, 8 or 9 rashers). Ellen had a muffin which was not so good. Sylvia had a pancake which, to judge by her preverbal reaction, was top-notch.

You can get there by taking the Southern Parkway to exit 55, turn right at the bottom of the ramp, turn right on county road 80, George's is about 1/2 mile down on the left.
