One of the rewards for October's atmospheric river deluge is a healthy crop of wild mushrooms. A friend foraged bolete/porcini mushrooms on the Sonoma Coast the size of his head last week. And prices are more reasonable for wild mushrooms than we've seen in years.

Following up on a tip from a friend, yesterday I called Far West Fungi's warehouse in South San Francisco to try to order two pounds of fresh chanterelles for pick-up. At 1:30pm I was quoted a price of $18 per pound over the phone. I was asked for my name and phone number to become a new customer. At 3pm, I was at the warehouse to retrieve my order and was invoiced $32 or $16 per pound. That box in the photo is what two pounds looks like. I paid by credit card.

For comparison, I've paid $25 to $40 per pound for fresh chanterelles at specialty grocers over the past decade or so. Calling FWF's own San Francisco store, the current price is $28 per pound.

My friend had paid $14 per pound a couple weeks ago and also bought matsutake for $28 per pound from the warehouse. Matsutake were available yesterday, but I decided to wait for another time and did not ask the current price.
