As I posted yesterday, just noticed that Jim Fahey is back as chef of Mexican Cuisine at the Forest Cafe (Mass Ave, 'tween Harvard & Porter). Couldn't wait, so we ate there last night.. Very Happy!! So much looked good on menu we were in a pickle as to what to order!! Same nice fresh corn chips & lovely salsa we remember from the old days to munch while considering..We got the Guacamole al Cilantro as app - very good, chunkey & creamy with an added bright zing of tomatillos as well as cilantro- I got the Macheca del Mar (sp?) described as a "hash of shrimp, scallop & fresh chili flavored with olive oil, bread crumbs & cracked black pepper" my other half ordered the regional mole of the day ("spicy fig, three chilies, mexican chocolate & almond") over grilled chicken. Both dishes wonderful, the Macheca was subtle and well balanced but flavorful (my O.H. called it mexican comfort food) The mole rather thin in texture (not a criticism, just observation), very complex and also well balanced. The chicken perfectly cooked with moist inside & slight char outside. Both dinners came with rice & salad and great care was obvious in both sides, the rice was slightly saffron flavored with a scattering of green peas, the salad a nice selection of fresh greens with a perfect amount of subtle dressing. The chicken with mole also came with wonderful fried plantains- tender and piquant...
All in all I would say that Fahey's touch seems more restrained and mature, but just as intriguing as ever. Looking forward to exploring lots more on menu!!
